Forthcoming Programs

June 3-5, 2005: Birds & Butterflies of the Texas Hill Country

Join us for a weekend with Ro Wauer, noted author of numerous books on Texas natural history. Ro worked for the National Park Service for 32 years before retiring in 1989; since that time he has devoted himself to writing, lecturing, and leading tours. For many years his chief focus was on birds, but more recently butterflies have become a consuming interest. On Friday night, we will have a get-acquainted dinner in our home. Saturday morning early, before the butterflies take flight, we will look for the best-known birds of the hill country, such as painted buntings, vermilion flycatchers, green kingfishers, and of course, our two endangered species, golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo (both of which nest at Lost Canyon). In the afternoon we will pursue butterflies in the gardens specifically designed to attract them and in the more remote parts of the property. We’ve found 21 species in the garden in an afternoon! Saturday night Ro will present a slide presentation on butterflies. On Sunday we will repeat the Saturday schedule: birds in the morning, butterflies in the afternoon. Like the botany weekend this program is appropriate for people of all skill levels – beginners are most welcome, as are children old enough to keep up with the group.

The cost for these programs and dinner with us is just $15. per person, beyond the price of the cabin you choose. All of the cabins have fully-equipped kitchens, so you can prepare your own meals, except for the dinner in our home.

Aug 26-28, 2005:  Summer Skies
Late summer is the very best time to view the heavens from a dark-sky site. The milky way glitters in a broad band from horizon to horizon, and the atmosphere is generally stable enough to allow a good telescope to bring many wondrous objects into sharp clarity in the eyepiece.

To take advantage of this we’re offering a two-night star party at Lost Canyon on the weekend of August 26-28. The moon will not be rising until after midnight, so we will have three hours of inky-dark skies, after which we can enjoy looking at the moon, too! We’ll use our recently-acquired 12.5” Starmaster scope to look for a wide variety of deep-sky objects: globular clusters, galaxies, planetary nebulas, double stars. Our 4” refractor will also be available for stunning wide-field views of the Milky Way, for open star-clusters, and for viewing the moon after it rises. We’ll brew coffee, and stay up late!

The party begins with a pot-luck supper at out home on Friday evening at 7:30 (I’ll give cooking assignments so we don’t end up with seven salads!). We’ll do the same on Saturday evening. In between you can enjoy sleeping, reading, swimming, hiking – the usual Lost Canyon pleasures.

Children? Absolutely.

Costs? Just the cost of your cabin (two-night minimum), as described on our website, www.lostcanyon.org

Deposits? None for returning guests. For new guests, 50% with reservation. This deposit is not refundable except as noted below.

What if it’s cloudy? You can cancel with no penalty.

Make or break date: August 10. We need to have at least four of the six cabins reserved to do this program. However, this program sold out quickly last year.

Can I bring my own scope? Sure. The more the merrier.
