For many amateur naturalists butterflies are a new enthusiasm, and it
only recently that good field guides have existed to complement the recent
growth in the number of man-enhanced butterfly habitats available for
observers. At Lost Canyon there are two gardens established with particular
emphasis on attracting butterflies: one in front of our home, the other
to be planted in the center of Scottie’s Garden. In
Spring and Fall the gardens in front of the house can be covered with
masses of fluttering color – we have recorded as many as 21 species
there at one time. The butterfly habitat within Scottie’s Garden
will take a few years to mature. In the meantime, please help us expand
our species list – there are a number of species in addition to
those on the list here that should be found on our property, in the right
season and in the right habitat.
